Changes in Co-op Act opposed

MANGALORE: The Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) has condemned the State Government's amendment to the Karnataka Co-operative Societies (KCS) Act which would, when implemented, keep all labour disputes in the co-operative sector exclusively within the jurisd iction of the Registrar of Co-operative Societies and prohibit civil and labour courts from taking up such cases.

Apart from the proposed amendment to Section 70(1)(d), 70(2)(d) and 118(1) of the KCS Act, a judgment issued by the Karnataka High Court in the Veerashaiva Co-operative Bank case has also, according to BMS, added fuel to the fire, with innumerable cases pending before the labour courts and industrial tribunals since such cases would no longer come within their purview.

According to the BMS, since the Registrar of Co-operative Societies is a `part of the establishment', it would be naive to expect justice from such a source. -- Our Bureau
