Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, June 20

THE United Nations Permanent Representative in India, Dr. Brenda Gael Mc Sweeney, met the Secretary, Department of Company Affairs (DCA), Dr. P.L. Sanjeev Reddy, here on Tuesday and discussed measures for all-round human development in the context of new code for corporate governance.

Dr. Reddy said the representation of women on the board of directors of companies was high on the agenda of the Government.

He said that more than 6.5 lakh companies were functioning as on date, and if the Government succeeded in its endeavour to ensure women representation to the extent of at least 20 per cent on the board of directors of each company, it will be creating si x lakh women corporate leaders.

Dr. Reddy said the proposal for representation of women on the board was in the final stages of consideration.

Dr. Mc Sweeney said that India had been a hub of all-round developments and it was time that it took a lead in the development of its people through information technology. In this connection, she also presented a compilation on human development and the role of IT to Dr. Reddy.

She added that a United Nations Information Technology (UNITECH) seminar was proposed to be held sometime in September to highlight the potential and accomplishment of IT in human development.
