Webcopier -- Download entire sites in a jiffy

C Ramesh

WebCopier is a useful tool for people who can't have enough of the Internet, but do not have the time or the resources for it. It copies entire Web sites and stores them locally, on your system, until you are ready to view them. Once you have copied a si te, you can access its content at any time no matter where you are, and what's best, even when you are not connected to the Net.

A fast offline Web browser, it is quite easy to use. WebCopier downloads multiple files simultaneously (up to 100 files) and creates an easily navigable tree of the site. One can also view the structure of the site before beginning the download.

All paths are stored in relative form, which facilitates easy movement of files. Besides, specially-designed `Wizards' come to the user's aid in creating new `Projects' (a Project is the collection of pages or elements from a Web site).

You can limit the download to a single host or let it roam to other domains. The software includes file filters that let you download all files of one particular kind, say, just the pictures or just the audio.

Users don't even need to have any browser installed, but a few features -- like the Integrated browser and printing -- will not be available without Internet Explorer installation.

Some Web sites may have large `.exe' and `.zip' files within them. You can make WebCopier ignore them by using the File Filters option. WebCopier also has the ability to specify the upper file size limit of the program to download. The default value is 2 MB.

Among the many features of this software are the ability to print entire Web sites or only specific portions. It supports JavaScript (.js), Java Classes (.class) and Macromedia Flash (.sfw) files.

The latest version has improved support for large projects. If the Contents tree has several thousand files, the project will be opened much faster, and a special message is displayed to let the user know what the program is doing. WebCopier also supports proxy servers, and allows you to specify a user name and password to access secure Web sites.

The site's latest addition is the Message forum, where users can post their questions which are not already answered in the FAQs section. Many of the bugs found in earlier versions have also been fixed.

This utility comes in handy for the student, who can use it to download enormous amounts of information from the Internet, the Web developer, who can download an entire site and study its structure and details and of course, the information jun kie.
