NSSO survey on unorganised SMEs

COIMBATORE, June 23

THE National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation of the Union Government is conducting a survey on small manufacturing enterprises in the unorganised sector.

The field operations, commencing from July 1, 2000 would continue for a year up to June 30, 2001, according to a release from Mr. S. Chattopadhyay, Deputy Director, NSSO, Field Operations Division (FOD), Coimbatore.

He said the main objective of the survey was to collect data on economic and operational characteristics of small manufacturing enterprises in the unorganised sector by using scientific sampling methods in rural and urban sectors. Along with this, the an nual round of survey on consumer expenditure and employment-unemployment will also be undertaken on a thin sample of households.

He said the information gathered would be used by the Planning Commission, the Union and State Governments for formulating employment and poverty alleviation programmes, etc. He assured that complete confidentiality would be maintained and individual det ails furnished ``would not be shared with any other agency such as Sales Tax, Income Tax and Excise authorities''.
