Airlines
BA to continue with Calcutta service
BRITISH Airways is believed to have changed its mind. Reports have it that the airline might not go ahead with its earlier plan to withdraw its service from Calcutta. The current thinking, it is learnt, is to continue the service, though t he route might change.

Shipping
Shahi Shipping to launch feeder service
THE Mumbai-based Shahi Shipping Ltd will start a feeder service linking Mumbai and Jawaharlal Nehru ports from July 18. The company has received Customs clearance for the service which will help mainline shipping lines discharge cargoes meant both for Mu mbai and Nhava Sheva at any one of the ports.

Transport
Charting a legal course
A bill of lading is issued for a container of general cargo packed in bags, but it does not indicate how many bags are there in the container. At the discharge port, a survey, conducted on the basis of complaint of tampering of seals, shows that all pack ages were short. Can the shipowner limit his liability on package limitation to a single unit or is he liable to pay compensation on all the five packages as individual units?

Road development fund loses focus
THE much-hyped Central Road Fund, the dedicated fund for road development, appears to have lost its focus. The fund was to have been created out of the proceeds of the Re. 1 cess on petrol and diesel.

Cargo airports -- The efficient alternative
IS THE cargo airport -- that is, an airport meant exclusively for handling cargo -- emerging as a serious alternative? This question is being asked by many in the air cargo industry these days. Not without reasons too. The issue was discus sed at various international fora, including at the recent Air Freight Asia 2000, the world convention on air freight held in Kuala Lumpur, and views both for and against the proposal for a cargo airport were freely expressed by an in dustry cross-section.

Modern roads need modern equipment
`THE INDIAN road network is seemingly very large. However, only 46 per cent of the roads are paved and only 20 per cent of the paved roads are estimated to be in good condition.' This admission about the condition of the roads comes in a discussion paper on integrated transport policy, released by the Planning Commission.
