Shortfall likely in kharif output in Gujarat
GUJARAT, which saw a 38-per cent slump in production and a seven-per cent fall in the area under cultivation during the last kharif season due to failed monsoons, has been dealt a severe blow on account of the delayed monsoons once again this year.

Crop sowing on in TN irrigated areas
FARMERS in Tamil Nadu have pinned their hopes on the monsoon to increase crop areas. Having brought under crop cover areas with assured irrigation, farmers are awaiting the onset of monsoon to take up extensive sowing, according to official sources.

Normal rainfall in Kerala
KERALA received normal rainfall from the south-west monsoon in June which precludes the need for any change in the prevalent cropping pattern predominated by perennial cash crops, according to sources in the State Agriculture Ministry.

It's time to boost research on dryland crops
FOR the first time, rabi foodgrains output has crossed the 100-million-tonne barrier, touching 102.01 m.t. in 1999-2000, as per the latest estimates compiled by the Agriculture Ministry.

Rains in Rajasthan revive hopes
MONSOON showers over the last two days in Jaipur, Udaipur, Dungarpur and parts of Kota have brought a sigh of relief to the farmers and policymakers in Rajasthan. Besides, intermittent rains have also been reported from pockets of Barmer, the epicentre o f the recent drought.

Rice prospects good in Bengal
WEST Bengal has a net cropped area of 54.63 lakh hectares spread across 17 agricultural districts (the total number of administrative districts is 18). The gross cropped area, however, is higher at 92 lakh ha. (more than one crop a year is grown in sever al areas). The total area under cultivation has remained more or less constant over the last few years.
