Bajaj Auto vehicle sales up 9% in Q1

MUMBAI, July 3
BAJAJ Auto Ltd's has reported a nine per cent increase in sales of its vehicles at 3,24,231 units for the quarter ended June 30, 2000 as against 2,96,514 vehicles sold in the year-ago quarter.
The company recorded a 105 per cent increase in motorcycle sales in June 2000 with a sale of 27,427 units as compared to 13,397 units in the year-ago period.
With these sales, the company has had an 87 per cent growth in the motorcycle segment in the first quarter of fiscal 2000 as against the industry growth of 34 per cent.
Sales of motorcycles in the first quarter of 2000-2001 were 85,266 units (45,642 units).
In the scooterette segment, sales of Bajaj Sunny and Bajaj Spirit were 7,876 units as against 3,797 units in the year-ago period. Quarter one sales in this segment recorded 78 per cent with sales at 19,562 units (10,995 units).
``Strong focus on the growth segments of motorcycles and scooterettes has started reflecting on our performance,'' the company said in a press release.
In the `Indian motorcycle segment', Bajaj Auto's sales rose by 17 per cent to 13,615 units in June 2000 as compared to 11,681 units in June 1999. In the first quarter period, Bajaj Major sales grew by 10 per cent to 37,779 units (34,295 units).
In the three wheeler segment, Bajaj Auto sales increased by 6 per cent while scooter sales declined by 10 per cent in the first quarter.
The company sold 39,434 three wheeler units (37,157 units) and 142,190 scooters (1,68,425 units).
