Role of teachers

Indira Venkataraman, E-mail

Apropos the article, `Life isn't only

money, honey' (Business Line June 27), it is suggested that to restore the balance between the material and spiritual aspects of life, teachers need to give the right orientation to schoolchildren.

Today, teachers in Government-funded schools are

well-paid, with liberal retirement benefits. Still, it is common to see them organising protest marches demanding a hike in wages. Some of them even demand teaching allowances. Some teachers prefer to use their talents outside the schools, by working in money-spinning coaching centres.

In this situation, how can one expect such teachers to make children understand that money is not everything in life?
