Monsoon in sowing phase better than normal
AGGREGATE rainfall during the current monsoon season has been on the `positive side of normal' so far for the country as a whole, with 26 out of the 35 meteorological sub-divisions receiving normal-to-excess rainfall.

Gold steady at $280 despite unexciting UK auction
AFTER a disappointing UK auction, gold continued to test the $280 per ounce level in the London market. The yellow metal slipped to $279.25/oz bid immediately following the result but the prices soon recovered to end back above $280/oz. Gold traded in a narrow range for the rest of the week to end on July 14 at $280.25/oz, down 0.9 per cent from the previous week.

Good demand at Kochi tea sale
A GOOD general demand persisted for almost all varieties at the Kochi tea auction. In the dust category, high priced CTCs remained steady, while other good liquoring medium CTCs were fully firm to sometimes dearer.

`S. India has excellent teas to offer for exports'
SOUTH India is yet to capitalise on some of the excellent tea varieties it can offer to the world market, Mr.S.S. Ahuja, Chairman, Tea Board, has observed.
