Jet Air flights from Mumbai hit

Our Bureau

MUMBAI, July 16

THE Maharashtra Government's decision to prosecute the Shiv Sena chief, Mr. Bal Thackeray, affected the operations of privately-owned Jet Airways today with some staff members not reporting for work amidst tension in the city.

The airline could operate only eight of its morning flights from here as a result. ``Flights from then on had to be cancelled,'' a Jet Airways spokesman said.

While the exact number of flights cancelled was not available, he said normalcy was expected to be restored later in the day.

A spokesman for Indian Airlines said the airline had faced no problem. Passengers travelling by Jet Airways and who had their flights cancelled were accommodated on IA flights, he said.

``All our flights from here operated normally though with fewer crew members,'' a spokesman for Air India said.

From Saturday evening and into much of today, Mumbai was in the grip of an uneasy calm following the Government's decision. Stray cases of violence were reported. Rumours also fuelled fear in the city, already fatigued by floods and heavy rain.
