GoM to review REC's role, operations

NEW DELHI, July 16
THE future role and operations of the Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) will be reviewed by the recently-constituted Group of Ministers (GoM) on rural electrification, according to the Power Minister, Mr. P.R. Kumaramangalam.
Addressing the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to the Power Ministry, he said that the GoM will review the funding and role of REC.
Addressing the members of the committee, the Minister of State for Power, Ms. Jayawanti Mehta, said that 85 per cent of the rural areas have been electrified.
On the Electricity Bill, 2000 which consolidates the existing electricity laws, Mr. Kumaramangalam said that the Bill will be introduced in the Parliament after the comments of the GoM and the clearance from the Cabinet.
The Members of Parliament who attended the meeting included Mr. Suresh Chandel, Dr. Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Mr. Vujyendra Pal Singh, Mr. Dharam Raj Singh Patel, Mr. Shankar Prasad Jaiswal and Ms. Prabha Rao.
