NPIL to file patent for `Aablaquin' in foreign countries

MUMBAI, Aug. 10

NICHOLAS Piramal India Ltd (NPIL) is to file patent for its malarial molecule, `Aablaquin' in Brazil, Korea, Thailand and Tanzania.

Speaking to presspersons after the company's annual general meeting on Wednesday, Dr. Swati Piramal, Chief Scientific Officer and Director, Nicholas Piramal India Ltd, said that the malarial drug was introduced in Thane district recently since number of cases of malaria were reported in the region.

Initially, the company would make the drug available in 10 more districts of Maharashtra which include, Satara, Nagpur and Gadchiroli.

The company will launch the product in other parts of the country later this week.

Aablaquin is priced at Rs. 80 for the full dosage. The treatment is for six days with two tablets per day. The patent is jointly held by CDRI (Central Drug & Research Institute, Lucknow) and Nicholas Piramal India Ltd.

Dr. Swati Piramal said that the herbal products in the anvil would be in the areas of immune modulation and inflammation. The company was also planning a seminar on malaria by September this year which would be Web-cast worldwide, she added.

Nicholas Piramal would be targeting a growth rate of 20 per cent for the full year, Mr. Ajay Piramal, Chairman, Nicholas Piramal, said.

On being queried about the company's proposed ADR issue, Mr. Piramal said that the company was waiting for the ``right'' market conditions.
