Xerox Modi proposes to reposition software unit
Our Bureau
CHENNAI, Aug. 10
XEROX Modicorp Ltd. (XML) plans to reposition its software development centre as a separate business unit and invest in India, from XML's internal accruals, $ 8-10 millions towards technology and infrastructure expansion.
Addressing a press conference to highlight XML's integration of Indian operations with Xerox Corporation of the US, Mr. Carlos Pascual, Chairman, XML, said that the company is finalising the move to make the software centre a revenue earner catering to g
lobal requirements.
This, he said, will be in keeping with the company's move to position itself as a total document solutions provider. The company will focus on areas covering digital imaging, high end document systems and services.
From being a copier company, XML will now focus more on being a digital products and software services and directly handle this segment with its own resources. It will maintain its presence in the traditional segments but is more likely to handle it thro
ugh distributors and other local networks, Mr. Pascual said.
With Xerox holding a 68 per cent stake, Modicorp 25 per cent and the public 7 per cent, XML is now closely integrated with its US-based parent. Apart from adopting the global corporate identity The Document Company, Xerox, XML can access products from Xe
rox research centres, he said.
New Inkjet products would be introduced in India in October and November following a worldwide launch in September. This was the outcome of a $ 2-billion strategic alliance with Sharp Corporation and Fuji Xerox aimed at providing affordable inkjet printi
ng, he said.
Mr. H.N. Nanani, Managing Director, XML, said that investments would be made in infrastructure, human resources and systems and other support structures.
On the occasion, Xerox launched Docuprint N series network laser printers. The series of five printers comes with 23 innovative and hi-tech features and copy at speeds of 20-40 pages per minute. The printers offer high paper-handling capabilities for sma
ll to medium groups, according to company officials.
Our Delhi Bureau adds: Xerox Corporation has decided to drop the name `Modi' from `Modi Xerox', its brand currently in use for products sold in the country.
While the new brand identity will be the global corporate identity of Xerox Corporation and will be described as `The Document Company, Xerox', the legal name of the joint venture company will continue to be XML, company sources said.
