Eye care

Piyush Pandey, New Delhi

A startling fact is that India has the largest number of blind people in the world. According to a survey, 50 per cent of the people who should undergo optical correction are not even aware of it. It reflects badly on the eyecare infrastructure available in the country.

According to latest figures, around 25 per cent of the world's blind population is in India. The saddest part is that many of them turned blind at various stages of life because of various illnesses that could have been cured. A survey points out that mo re than 50 per cent of the people suffering from vision problems are not aware of the fact they need vision correction. There are few eye-care camps at the school and college levels. It is time the Government takes corrective action.
