NDDB to host dairy workshop

Our Bureau

AHMEDABAD, Oct. 29

THE National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) will join hands with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Addis Ababa, to get under one umbrella 13 countries at the Indian milk capital at Anand.

The four-day seminar, with nine Asian countries and four African nations, will commence on March 13, 2001 and will address `Small holders dairy production and marketing - opportunities and constraints'.

Mr Deepak Tikku, Managing Director, NDDB, said: ``There are quite a few countries in this part of the world, mainly in Asia and Africa, which have endorsed the NDDB style of addressing the problems of production and marketing in the dairy business. While there are countries like Sri Lanka which have not been able to withstand the pressure from the developed countries which dump their products and has been a major impediment in the path of the domestic industry's growth, there are others like Ethiopia wh ich have indicated its eagerness to learn from the Indian experience''.

The South-South workshop which has been scheduled for March 13-16, will have participants representing the dairy sectors of Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Pakistan, China, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania, other th an India.

The participating countries are all currently major markets for the dairy produce of developed nations but have small holding dairy production of their own, which they hope to develop under the guidance of NDDB.
