CII workshop on farm productivity from Dec 16

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD, Dec. 8

THE Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), in association with the Farmers Federation of Andhra Pradesh (FFAP) and Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), is organising a two-day workshop here on `Agricultural productivity and rural development: T he road ahead' from December 16.

The workshop would focus on input industry and modernisation and expansion of agro-processing industry which were inter-dependent and complimentary.

According to CII (Southern Region) Chairman, Mr Anil Kumar V Epur, the workshop would bring out issues that would be translated into policies and agenda for action. It was a platform to inform the Government about the necessary changes to be made in the tax structure and budgetary allocations.

He told newspersons that the target audience for the workshop were farmers, Government officials, economists, farm equipment manufacturers, fertiliser manufacturers and other agri industry members.

Dr Gautam Pingle of ASCI said that in the present day agricultural sector, the problem was not of supply management but of demand management. To overcome this problem, he suggested more investments, both domestic and foreign, in the sector. The Governmen t did not have adequate resources to rescue the farmers and regulate the demand particularly when there was a glut in the market, he said.

The FFAP President, Mr P. Chengal Reddy, said that the workshop was aimed at identifying critical issues which could bring about a qualitative change in the agriculture sector and give a quantum jump in terms of increased production and employment genera tion.
