Infosys gesture to Mangalore police

MANGALORE: As a `small token' of its attempt to add value to the police force and a sign of its `social commitment', Infosys Technologies Ltd has donated a jeep to the Mangalore police in recognition of the harsh conditions under which policemen operate.

Addressing a press conference on Sunday before handing over the keys of the jeep to the Superintendent of Police here, the Infosys chief, Mr N.R. Narayana Murthy, said that all the `software development centres' of Infosys `work very, very closely with t he local police' and added that `policemen, like the rest of us, have wives, parents and children.'

As other tokens of its social commitment and value-addition, the Mangalore software development centre of Infosys, which on its own has exported software worth more than Rs 100 crore, has donated 156 computers in the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of the State and still has a waiting list of 230 apart from having indulged in several rural reach programmes.

The company, apparently, is also a `pioneer' in blood donation.

Mr Narayana Murthy also said that extension of the runway at Mangalore airport to facilitate international traffic, especially to and from Europe, was also necessary for the IT industry to develop in this region, he added. -- Our Bureau
