TNPL to upgrade paper machine

CHENNAI, Feb. 21

TAMIL Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd (TNPL) is taking up a Rs 40-crore project to upgrade its first paper machine. It has awarded the contract to Voith Paper, Germany. The project will be funded through internal accruals.

The upgrade will increase the Beloit Bel Baie II paper machine's capacity to 1,05,000 tonnes from the present 80,000 tonnes. The quality of the paper will also be superior and TNPL's total production capacity will go up to 2,05,000 tonnes from 1,80,000 t onnes. The project was expected to be completed by May 2002, said the press release.

Voith Paper would provide the complete supply and engineering for the upgrade which would focus on the press area, said the release.

A modern shoe press, which TNPL said was the first of its kind in the country, with ceramic rolls and a steam box would be installed. The upgrade will also include better wire cleaning systems, improved paper threading and transfer systems and dryer syst ems.

TNPL is among the largest integrated paper mill with two twin-jet paper machines in one location. The second machine was commissioned in 1996 by Voith.

The company set a monthly production record of 17,567 tonnes in January 2001. This was the result of improvements in the process line and the total quality management work style, said the press release.
