`US sanctions may be lifted soon'

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, Feb. 21

THE economic sanctions imposed by the US on India, after the Pokharan nuclear tests, will be lifted soon. This was the unanimous view of the visiting US Congressional delegation at a meeting organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here on Wednesday.

Addressing the meeting, Congressman, Mr Jim McDermott, said that he was optimistic that the present administration would initiate measures to lift the sanctions soon.

He was of the view that the sanctions had had an adverse impact on both nations and, hence, had to be reviewed. He added that the US placed tremendous importance on its relations with India and pointed out that the State Department was working hard to ma intain the momentum of the relationship.

Addressing the meeting, Congressman, Mr Ed Royce, highlighted the need to facilitate trade and investment links between India and the US.

He stated that the caucus was trying to convince the American business that investing in India was more profitable in the long run than investing in a country which did not have a democratic system.
