Supreme Tele plans presence in UAE

Vimala Vasan

ABU DHABI, Feb. 21

SUPREME Telecommunications Ltd has initiated plans to set up a joint venture with a UAE-based company in Dubai, which would serve as its operations hub for the West Asian region.

Mr Amarlal Ramrakhiani, General Manager, who participated in the recently-concluded Indexpo 2001 Dubai exhibition, told Business Line that the joint venture was expected to come up in 4-6 months.

``We may be setting up the venture at the Dubai Internet City,'' he added.

The $25-million company, which has tie-ups in India with major MNCs such as Nokia and Alcatel to provide nationwide networks, is keen to market its telecom, optical fibre, infra-red systems and related services overseas, he said.

``Our first focus is West Asia, with Europe and the US being other destination markets. We received an excellent response at the Dubai exhibition and we feel the potential in this region is very good,'' he said.

Through the planned joint venture, the company will focus on nearby markets. Negotiations were already on with firms in Bahrain and Sudan, he said.

According to Mr Ramrakhiani, talks have been held with representatives of the UAE's Thuraya GSM satellite company for possible tie-ups in India, and enquiries have been received from Myanmar as well.

Mauritius is another market where the firm had a very positive response earlier and is likely to take up work shortly.

Supreme Telecommunications has reported a growth of 80 per cent last year, based on market-driven prices and provision of cutting-edge technology, he said.

The company, which has highly trained manpower, was targeting a 150 per cent growth this year, he added.
