VPT's IT project to be ready by July

HAVING suffered considerable delays due to various reasons, Vizag port's ambitious information technology project to monitor the entire gamut of its cargo-handling operations is likely to be wrapped up by July 2001.

According to official sources, the installation and commissioning of the project's major components have more or less reached the final stages of completion. These include development of application software by Mumbai-based Datamatics Information Technol ogy Ltd; installation of a cable plant providing wired connectivity to various specified locations in the port area by Hyderabad-based Bay Datacom Solutions; installation of Digital EPABX telephony network system and video-conferencing system by Siemens Ltd; and installation of the principal computer hardware and software system by Hyderabad-based ECIL.

``In each of these components, the specified and required equipment ordered from the respective vendors were delivered, third-party testing completed and installation is at an advanced stage of completion,'' the sources said.

There was considerable delay in commissioning the project, primarily on account of the difficulties confronted in procuring the active components of the network from Secunderabad-based HCL Comnet Systems and Services Ltd, as the initial order from the pr incipal vendor, Three-Com, ran into some problems. ``However, with considerable effort and planning, ultimately the active components were procured from Alcatel, which delayed the project by as much as six months,'' the sources said. -- Our Bureau
