Chennai's loss, others' gain
If the present situation is any indication, the continuing strike at Chennai port might be a boon to neighbouring ports. Container Corporation of India (Concor) has already started diverting export containers, due for shipments through Chennai, to Tutico
rin port.
The diversion started last Thursday with a special train carrying 50 containers to Tuticorin. Earlier in the week, the Customs authorities permitted containers cleared at Chennai to be sent to Tuticorin for shipment. In fact, sealed containers are also b
eing allowed for movement by road to Tuticorin.
This has allowed other ports in the region to have a greater share of the traffic, especially as the rules allow Customs-cleared containers to be shipped from any port. Cochin Port Trust is understood to have asked Concor to consider if a special train w
ith export containers could also be run from Chennai to Cochin. -- Our Bureau
