5 new items come under BIS purview

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, May 20

THE Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has brought five new products under its Certification Marks Scheme.

Besides packaged natural mineral water, the new additions include capacitors for electrical fan motors, textured plant protein foods prepared by extrusion cooking (high protein vegetarian food for human consumption), inhibited mineral insulating oils and deltamethrin F (a pesticide for household pests), according to a BIS communique.

With the addition of the five products, the total number of products under BIS Certification has gone up to 1,042. BIS has also granted 262 new certification licences which brings the total number of operative licences to 15,083.

With the opening up of the markets, the need was felt to regulate the goods entering the Indian market. While a total 133 products were put under compulsory certification under various quality control orders issued by the Union Government for Indian manu facturers, it has recently been notified by the Director-General of Foreign Trade that import of these goods will be permitted only after BIS certification.

BIS has already launched two quality certification schemes for foreign manufacturers and importers. The certification body has granted seven licences under the foreign manufacturers scheme for wood particle boards, ordinary portland cement, portland slag cement to units in Nepal and Bhutan. One licence has also been granted for spark ignition engines under the importers scheme.
