Airlines
Low cargo load gives airlines the fright
WITH cargo volumes falling dramatically over the past few weeks, airlines have dropped freight rates. Freighters are flying out with less than 50 per cent load factor. The drop in cargo volumes has caught the airlines off guard. The air cargo industry is in a panic as the reasons for the downturn are not clear.

Revival of minor ports in Kerala -- Grounded even before launch
AS THE new Government in Kerala is readying itself to sort out issues amidst a severe financial crunch, one of the major tasks will be reviving the development plan for the minor ports in the State.

DLB merger with ChPT -- Need-based manpower deployment
THE Madras Dock Labour Board (MDLB) is being merged with the Chennai Port Trust (ChPT). As a result, over 1,000 MDLB workers will become part of ChPT's workforce.

PPT, PPL to refer rift to disputes panel
THE Paradip Port Trust (PPT) and Paradeep Phosphates Limited (PPL) have decided to refer their dispute over the revision of the scale of rates and interest on arrears for arbitration to the Committee on Disputes (CoD) under the Cabinet Secretariat.

Cyclone-psychosis hurts KPT business
EVER since June 1998, when a cyclone damaged the port, the authorities of the Kandla Port Trust (KPT) have stopped taking any chances. Whenever there is a storm warning, the authorities declare the port closed, whether or not the storm really lashes the port. This has happened several times in the past, and once again this year.

Oils/oilmeal coast west
GUJARAT PORTS -- Kandla, Bedi (Jamnagar) and, now, Mundra -- continue to be the main gateways used by exporters of oilmeals and importers of edible oils. These ports are likely to witness increasing volumes even as the attractiveness of othe r ports, such as Mumbai, is waning.

AP to build up transport network on fast track
ANDHRA PRADESH is thinking up ways to develop a sound transportation infrastructure, as part of its programme to shore up the industrial infrastructure so as to attract investments from home and abroad.

LCL adds to Concor's revenue
WITH the new concept of `Less than Container Load' (LCL) from the Container Corporation of India (Concor), traders with small loads can now avoid costly air freight and choose Concor. They can also save time by not waiting for a full cargo load.

Rlys signals red on wagon purchase, scraps old ones
IF THE report doing the rounds in railway circles is any indication, the wagon procurement for this financial year is to be slashed to 5,000 (in terms of four-wheeler units) and even less from the proposed 23,000.
