Cyclone-psychosis hurts KPT business

EVER since June 1998, when a cyclone damaged the port, the authorities of the Kandla Port Trust (KPT) have stopped taking any chances. Whenever there is a storm warning, the authorities declare the port closed, whether or not the storm really lashes the port. This has happened several times in the past, and once again this year.

Though this precaution is taken to protect the lives of port workers and prevent damage to equipment and property, port users are not impressed by the closure decision as it hits them hard. The ships get diverted, operations remain suspended, and the wor kers flee. Experience has shown that once port operations is suspended for several days, much effort and time is needed to get them back on track. Kandla port is also yet to recover fully from the effects of the earthquake early this year.

With Kandla Port staying closed, the neighbouring ports are likely to benefit. Some of these are privately managed, while others are in the joint sector. Interestingly, the authorities in these ports do not suspend their operations, despite the seriousne ss of the storm warnings. Thus, while Kandla port remains closed apprehending a cyclone, these ports do brisk business. -- Our Bureau
