Drinking water project in Dakshina Kannada

MANGALORE: Preliminary work on the Rs 40-crore Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water project in the Dakshina Kannada district has started and `village committees' have been constituted in 359 of the 370 villages to be covered under the project, according to the Mi nister in charge of the district, Mr B. Ramanatha Rai.

Speaking at the zilla panchayat office here at a meeting to discuss the project, Mr Rai said that 257 of the villages have already collected 10 per cent of the project cost as required by the terms and conditions of the project and approximately Rs 8.2 c rore has already been collected as the contribution of the villages towards the project. -- Our Bureau
