Political system

N. Vijayaraghavan, Chennai

In the article `Retribution or a sign of desperation' (Business Line, July 1), a vital point has been made: If some checks and audits are incorporated in our political system, no violation of constitutional law could recur as witnessed in the arrest of M r M. Karunanidhi. The incarceration of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the Centre recalling the State's Governor, Ms Fatima Beevi, has put the people of Tamil Nadu in a fix.

According to the Constitution, the Governor functions as a bridge between the Centre and State. Ms Beevi's report to the Prime Minister must have been based on what she, prima facie, has observed.

The delay in submitting her report to the Prime Minister should not be construed as a reason for not fulfilling her constitutional obligations and recommend her being recalled as Governor. The BJP Government owes Ms Beevi an explanation for its behaviour .
