Panchayat Raj Ministers' meet in Capital today

NEW DELHI, July 10
THE Centre has convened a meeting of the State Panchayat Raj Ministers in New Delhi on July 11, 2001. Announcing this in Dehra Dun on Sunday, the Minister for Rural Development, Mr M Venkaiah Naidu, said that the meeting is aimed at building a consensus
regrading speedy implementation of the 73rd amendment of the Constitution which mandates 29 subjects to the Panchayati Raj institutions.
Mr Naidu said that the two other important issues to be discussed at the meeting include conducting of elections to Panchayati Raj institutions, and the coming up of parallel bodies in some States which are affecting such institutions.
The Minister also said that the Centre will support the setting up of a State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD) at Rudrapur in Uttranchal to train Panchayati Raj representatives of the State.
