Work on NTPC hydel project next year

VISAKHAPATNAM: NTPC will be launching construction work on its first hydel power project being set up at Koldam in Himachal Pradesh by next year.

According to Mr H.L. Bajaj, NTPC's Director (Commercial), the Rs 4,000-crore 800 MW project is likely to be wrapped up in six years, with the company having appointed EDF of France as its consultant.

``We will be taking up more hydel projects as part of our plans to expand our scope of operations,'' he told reporters here.

Mr Bajaj said NTPC had plans to double its generating capacity from 19,435 MW to almost 40,000 MW by 2012. This would be achieved through setting up of a string of greenfield, expansion and joint venture projects.

According to him, NTPC has tied up with IOC for setting up petro-cake-based power projects. -- Our Bureau
