Maharashtra tops investment chart

CHENNAI: Maharashtra continued to dominate the country's project investment map despite the unprecedented decline at the national level in the first quarter of 2001-02.

According to the Economic Research India Ltd, Mumbai, Maharashtra accounted for 11.75 per cent of the country's total investments with Rs 191,490 crore for 1,030 projects. It was followed by Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The top five States accounted for nearly half the total investments in the country.

Gujarat, despite the massive earthquake in January, retained its traditional second position with project investment worth Rs 171,747 crore. Among the three new States formed in November last year, Chhattisgarh has been more successful in attracting inve stments. -- Our Bureau
