Work suspension in Kesoram Text continues

Our Bureau

KOLKATA, July 20

THE manufacturing activity at the factory of Kesoram Textiles Mills Ltd (KTML), a B.K. Birla group outfit, continues to remain ``suspended''. The suspension of work was declared in January 5, 1999. At the time of declaring work suspension, the mill, loca ted near here, had around 3,800 workers on its rolls.

According to the management, efforts to arrive at a settlement with the unions have not yielded any result so far. Blockade and barricade by a section of workers in front of the mill's gate continue.

The shareholders of KTML were told at the company's second AGM here today by Mr N.G. Khaitan, Chairman, that ``the rigid stand taken by a section of workers and their unions'' was responsible for the stalemate.

KTML was created through hiving off a division of Kesoram Industries Ltd in mid-1999. In 2000-2001, KTML recorded a turnover of Rs 2.35 crores through trading activity. In 1999-2000, it had achieved a turnover of Rs 3.33 crores. Currently, it purchases g rey cloth and outsources the processing for trading.
