Electric vehicle body seeks duty relief

Our Bureau

BANGALORE, July 20

THE Electric Vehicles Association of India (EVAI) is considering submitting a policy paper to the Government seeking its attention on issues relating to the use of electric vehicles in the country.

At a panel discussion here, Mr B.R. Prabhakar, President, EVAI, said to further the cause of the electric vehicles industry, an inter-ministerial liaison group was needed to be established which would speed up co-ordination and action between the various regulating bodies.

To facilitate this co-ordination, the Government must recognise the inherent advantages of such a consolidated approach and at the same time consider extending financial support to the nascent industry by waiving the customs and import duties, he said.

Mr S.K. Maini, Chairman, Reva Electric Car Company, said EVAI recognised the supportive role of the Government in promoting the industry.

Dr Arun Sahay, Vice-President, EVAI, and Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Scooters India, stressed on the importance of increasing the awareness of electric vehicles among the masses, through Government participation.

Mr H.W. Bhatnagar, Director, BHEL, and Mr Saomi Saran, Chairman, Mahindra Eco Mobiles Ltd, proposed that EVAI be affiliated with the Electric Vehicles Association of Asia-Pacific (EVAAP) to enhance India's credibility in this area in the global market an d also to emphasise the Indian technological excellence in the area.
