K.R. Srivats

NEW DELHI, July 20

THE President of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham), Mr Raghu Mody, has been appointed to the membership of the Prime Minister's Council on Trade and Industry. Hitherto, the Assocham President was never a part of the Council.

Sources said that the PM's Council on Trade and Industry has been reconstituted during the second week of July.

The members of the reconstituted Council are Mr Ratan Tata, Mr Mukesh Ambani, Mr Sanjeev Goenka, President, CII, Mr Kumar Mangalam Birla, Mr N. Srinivasan, Mr N.R. Narayana Murthy, Mr Nusli Wadia, Mr A.C. Muthiah, Mr Rajeev Chandrasekar, Mr Chirayu Amin, President, FICCI, Mr Raghu Mody, President, Assocham and Principal Secretary to Prime Minister.

Dr Prodipto Ghosh, Additional Secretary to Prime Minister, will now be the Member-Secretary of the Council.

The Prime Minister's Council on Trade and Industry was constituted in November 1999 to enable a regular interface between some of the country's top industrialists and entrepreneurs and the Government.

It was held that an interaction with leading representatives of trade and industry allowed the Government to receive specific suggestions for the development of various sectors of the economy.
