Bid to revive Silent Valley project

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government will seek the Centre's approval for implementing the Silent Valley hydel project which was shelved in 1979 in the face of stiff resistance by environmentalists.

The project is sought to be revived in the context of the rising cost of power generation in the State.

The Electricity Minister, Mr. Kadavoor Sivadasan, said in the State Assembly on Thursday that the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) had been instructed to prepare the papers for putting up the project for the Centre's approval.

The project was shelved at the instance of the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, who had promised that the Centre would reconsider it 20 years later. The then Kerala Electricity Minister had suggested that the project could be executed as a "run-of-the -river" scheme. -- Our Bureau
