India, Nepal discuss trade, transit treaty

NEW DELHI, Aug 9

THE Department of Commerce (DoC) today said that senior Indian Government officials have discussed the problems faced by Indian industry, on account of the preferential imports facility accorded to articles manufactured in Nepal, with their Nepalese coun terparts.

A DoC release said that a meeting of senior Government officers of India and Nepal was held in Kathmandu on August 1-5 2001 for review of implementation of Indo-Nepal Treaties of Trade & Transit and the Agreement for Cooperation to Control Unauthorised T rade.

The Indian delegation was led by Commerce Secretary, Mr Prabir Sengupta, and the Nepalese delegation was led by Mr Bhanu Prasad Acharya, Secretary, Ministry of Industries, Commerce & Supplies, Government of Nepal.

The release also said that issues relating to bilateral trade between India and Nepal, transit facilities provided by India to facilitate trade of landlocked Nepal with third countries, potential for promotion of investment, harmonisation of standards, r egulation of vehicular traffic, improvement of infrastructure and land customs stations were on the agenda for discussions.

Further, issues such as day-to-day problems in regulation of Nepalese traffic-in-transit, difficulties faced by Indian joint ventures in Nepal and import of Indian vehicles into Nepal under emission norms were also on the agenda for discussions.
