TN to frame policy for SSIs

COIMBATORE, Aug. 9

WITH the global competition threat looming over the small and tiny industries, the Tamil Nadu Government is in the process of framing a State policy on small industries which will offer safeguard against financial and marketing hiccups to the latter.

According to the Secretary, Department of Small Industries, Tamil Nadu Government, Mr N Murugan, the proposed policy would attempt on a geographical cluster/ consortium approach for the small and tiny industries uplift.

He was addressing a seminar on `application service provider (ASP) for small and medium enterprises' organised by the CII here.

Talking to presspersons, he said that some of the SSI sector that may qualify to be brought under the cluster approach were the automobile ancillaries, match industry, leather and knitwear.

With the removal of quantitative restrictions under the WTO, small industries in the country became vulnerable to increased competition.

Mr Murugan said the State had 3.87 lakh registered small industries units in the State and an equal number of unregistered units were operating. Out of this, 84 per cent were in the tiny sector. At least 30,000 small and tiny businesses could be potentia l candidates to get the services from the application service providers.
