Fishermen in AP go stir from Aug 16

VISAKHAPATNAM: Fishermen in the mechanised sector in the State will go on an indefinite strike from August 16 to focus the Government's attention on the hike in prices of major inputs and the fall in the export rates of shrimp.

According to the President, Andhra Pradesh Mechanised Fishing Boat Operators Association, Mr. P. C. Appa Rao, mechanised boats would return to their jetties along the Andhra coast by August 15 and keep off further fishing operations.

While the fishermen in the mechanised sector have been demanding various incentives both from the Central and State Government, the immediate provocation for them has been the upward revision of the berth charges at the Fishing Harbour by the Visakhapatn am Port Trust from Rs 239 to Rs 2,069 and the fall in procurement price by shrimp exporters on account of depressed market conditions in Japan. -- Our Bureau
