TN: New tourism policy formulated
CHENNAI: A new tourism policy for the State is being formulated with special focus on infrastructure, according to Mr V. Ramadoss, Secretary, Information and Tourism Department, Tamil Nadu.
Mr Ramadoss was speaking at a function organised by the Hindustan Chamber of Commerce on the ``Potentiality of tourism in Tamil Nadu''.
He said the new policy would focus on making Tamil Nadu cost-effective and safe for tourists and give a fillip for tourism. Though tourist arrivals in Tamil Nadu has grown by seven per cent every year, this figure was much lower than the neighbouring Sta
tes, he said.
Mr Ramadoss said the Government had studied the tourism policies of Kerala, Sikkim, Madhya Pradesh and will be incorporating some of the better aspects of these policies. He, however, declined to disclose further details, citing `budgetary discipline.'
Mr Kantilal A. Kamdar, President, Hindustan Chamber of Commerce, said taxation in the State was high and not conducive to tourism. He requested the Government to rationalise the taxes in this sector. -- Our Bureau
