Two more CEGAT benches moving to Mumbai
Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, Aug. 15
THE Finance Ministry has decided to shift two more benches of the Customs, Excise & Gold (Control) Appellate Tribunal (CEGAT) from Delhi to Mumbai.
A senior CEGAT official said that the decision to shift two of the existing benches from Delhi had been prompted by the increase in the number of appeals that are pending before CEGAT, Mumbai.
``As on July 1, about 18,317 appeals are pending at the Western Region Bench in Mumbai as against 2,370 appeals in the northern region. It was felt that more benches are required at Mumbai as there are lot more appeals that are pending there'', the offic
ial said.
Last year, the Finance Ministry had shifted one of existing benches in Delhi to Bangalore.
Currently, the CEGAT has five benches in Delhi, two benches in Mumbai and one each at Kolkata, Bangalore and Chennai. Each Bench consists of a judicial member and a technical member.
