Need to set up turmeric `polishing' centres

KOTTAYAM: There is a need to set up turmeric processing centres within regulated markets in Tamil Nadu to enhance both product quality and grower returns, according to a recent study conducted by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore.

Creating the processing facilities, commonly known as `polishing' would offer better prospects to farmers in disposing of their produce, the feasibilty study said.

The objectives of the study included verifying the extent of turmeric processing done by farmers, assessing the views of the farmers regarding installing turmeric polishing unit in regulated markets.

About 58 per cent of the turmeric sold was processed before sales while 42 per cent was marketed without processing.

However, installing turmeric polisher would give a net profit of Rs 2,45,265 per annum, the study claimed. -- Our Bureau
