M&M back to 6-day week

Our Bureau

MUMBAI, Oct. 29

AUTOMOBILE major, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M), has restored the normal six-day week schedule at its manufacturing plants.

But at its Kandivili plant, the operations of M&M's automotive sector continues for only 4-5 days a week, an official spokesperson for the company said when contacted.

The company's farm equipment sector has been on 6-day week operations, from September. The same month, work schedule for the automotive sector also reverted to six-day week, barring its operations at Kandivili in the city, the official said.

M&M, which reported a loss of Rs 29.62 crore for the ongoing fiscal's first quarter, had originally informed the Bombay Stock Exchange on February 13 that it was reducing the number of working days at its engine manufacturing plant in Igatpuri, from six to five.

The Igatpuri facility makes engines for M&M's utility vehicles (UVs). M&M is the country's biggest manufacturer of UVs and tractors.

This was followed on June 8, with another communique to the bourses announcing a five-day week at all the plants of the company's automotive sector. Among other reasons, M&M had then ascribed the move to ``aligning its production with market demand.''
