AP falls short of foodgrain export target
Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, Oct. 29
ANDHRA Pradesh is unable to export even two lakh tonnes of foodgrains though it has set an export target of 20 lakh tonnes. The State is not able to meet the target in spite of producing 160 lakh tonnes of foodgrains during 2000-01 as ``we could not comp
ete in the world market,'' according to the Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu.
Inaugurating the Rs 7-crore auditorium of the Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University here on Friday, Mr Naidu said agriculture in the State was at the cross-roads now and there was an urgent need to evolve suitable strategies to help farmers in reduc
ing input costs and taking up alternative crops.
Mr Naidu said his Government would consider to include agriculture as a general subject in the regular curriculam of schools and colleges for creating awareness on rural economy and the farm sector. He felt that the role of the agricultural university an
d the departments concerned has gained importance in view of the WTO agreement.
