Virgin Records to launch `Young Legends'

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD, Nov. 3

VIRGIN Records (India), part of the UK-based EMI, is to tap the domestic classical music business potential and plans to launch the `Young Legend series.'

The Marketing Manager of Virgin Records, Mr Shameer Tandon, told Business Line that the `Young Legend series' would be modelled on the on-going Taj Heritage series, where legends of Indian classical music are featured along with the Taj Group of Heritage Hotels.

In partnership with the Taj Group, Virgin is organising a series of classical concerts by music maestros across Taj Heritage properties in the country. Virgin Records has enlisted the services of classical artiste Shubha Mudgal as a Creative Director for the concert series.

Virgin Records plans to release the entire Taj Heritage series on tapes and CDs in the market on the conclusion of five classic-heritage concerts. As part of the series, a concert by noted musician Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was organised at Falaknuma Palace i n Hyderabad.

Commenting on the music industry, Mr Tandon said the industry was going through a `low phase'. Albums across the board -- cutting across various record labels and across various genres -- are not selling up to the mark. The invasion of television music c hannels and change in buying patterns have affected the classical music industry, he said.
