Banking and Finance
Fine on SBI
This refers to the various opinions being expressed about the fine of $7.5 million paid by State Bank of India for the alleged unsafe practices and procedures followed by its US offices. The following issues must be considered before criticising SBI.

Economy
Global downturn
This refers to the analytical and thought-provoking piece on Global downturn and prospect of recovery (Business Line, November 27). The authors have illuminated the genesis of the current slow down and the pivotal role played by the US economy in it. Th e authors could have looked at the prospects of revival now that the US Government with increased spending is pump priming their economy.

Miscellaneous
Cricket tribunal
This refers to "Punishment without appeal?"(Business Line, November 28). The authors point of view is absolutely tenable, and is in consonance with principles of jurisprudence. While the match referee, Mr Mike Denness, erred on two counts punishing play ers without proper inquiry, and punishing the captain which tantamounts to two punishments for the same crime the BCCIs attitude appears to be based more on emotions than on understanding of the issue.Instead of threatening to call off the tour and dump ing Mr Denness, the BCCI should have made efforts to postpone the third test to buy time to find an amicable solution to the problem.

States
Harsh measures in TN
The Tamil Nadu Government has announced a series of harsh measures that will hurt the poor, in particular.Without going into who is responsible for this state of affairs, it is a fact that current conditions require harsh measures.
