Wisner calls on Maran

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, Nov. 29

A BUSINESS delegation from the United States has sought closer trade and investment cooperation with India, particularly in the areas of knowledge-based industries.

A 10-member US business delegation, led by Mr. Frank G Wisner, former US Ambassador to India and currently Chairman, US-India Business Council, called on the Union Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr. Murasoli Maran here, on Thursday.

The global economic slowdown and the post-September 11 developments had impacted adversely Indias exports to the US during the current fiscal. The US is one of the largest trading partners and accounts for about 25 per cent of Indias total foreign invest ment approvals.

Mr. Maran hoped that the situation would improve in the coming months so that the momentum of Indias trade with the US could be sustained.

The delegation also presented to the Minister a study on Leveraging the knowledge-economy--a blueprint for Indo-US Cooperation, a joint project of FICCI and the US-India Business Council.
