Bharti gets licence for long-distance

NEW DELHI, Nov. 29

BHARTI Telesonic - a subsidiary of Bharti Televentures Ltd. has acquired the first licence for national long-distance (NLD) services, which has been thrown open to the private sector. It will be competeting with the incumbent operator Bharat Sanchar Niga m Ltd..

The only other company which holds the letter of intent (LI) for NLD services - Reliance Telecom - is yet to sign the licence agreement with the Department of Telecommunciations (DoT). VSNL too has applied for a licence, but has not received the LI, whil e Tata Teleservices too has expressed interest in offering the service.

According to a statement from Bharti Telesonic, it has deposited a licence fee of Rs 100 crore along with bank guarantees of Rs 400 crore in accordance with the terms and conditions of the licence agreement.
