Bharti gets licence for long-distance

NEW DELHI, Nov. 29
BHARTI Telesonic - a subsidiary of Bharti Televentures Ltd. has acquired the first licence for national long-distance (NLD) services, which has been thrown open to the private sector. It will be competeting with the incumbent operator Bharat Sanchar Niga

The only other company which holds the letter of intent (LI) for NLD services - Reliance Telecom - is yet to sign the licence agreement with the Department of Telecommunciations (DoT). VSNL too has applied for a licence, but has not received the LI, whil
e Tata Teleservices too has expressed interest in offering the service.
According to a statement from Bharti Telesonic, it has deposited a licence fee of Rs 100 crore along with bank guarantees of Rs 400 crore in accordance with the terms and conditions of the licence agreement.
