Sailing ahead with meditation

N.K. Kurup

Kumar Krishnamoorthy

MUMBAI, Sept. 24

ANYONE who is actively involved in the global business of shipping will hardly find time to relax, leave alone practice meditation daily for years and write a book on the basis of experience gained. But Kumar Krishnamoorthy, Indian head of the Italian shipping line, Lloyd Tristino, has done it that way.

His book, The Inner Light: Cosmic Meditation is a practical guide to meditation, the way the author has been practising it for three decades.

Normally, people think meditation is a difficult discipline to practice. But after reading Kumar one realises that one can do mediation anywhere anytime — at home, in a temple or even while commuting. For Kumar meditation is not an occasional activity.

It is a continuous process. "It is like a jyoti which you light in your home. Once the jyoti of Dhyan is lit, meditation becomes an effortless habit," says Kumar in his 214-page book. "Meditation is the natural state of your atma — your soul, your real entity."

His informal style makes the reading as easy as listening to a light discourse. The author says the entire book was written in the course of deep meditation and "every word of it has come from the cosmic forces".

Kumar who was Secretary of a shippers' body — the Western India Shippers Association — for many years, before joining Lloyd Tristino in 1992, believes if people start practicing meditation, many of the ills that currently afflict our society will vanish. The message of peace will spread.

When meditation becomes part of one's daily routine, one will be able to face life's challenges more easily through spiritual strength. Kumar himself survived many ups and downs in life, both personal and professional.

Even after Lloyd Tristino — the Government-owned Italian company — was taken over by the Taiwanese Shipping Group, Evergreen in 1998, Kumar continued at the helm of the company in India. He was later elected chief of foreign shipping lines operating in India.

From his practical experience, Kumar Krishnamoorthy tried to explore the true meaning of life through meditation. He is planning to publish Hindi and Gujarati version of the book soon.

It was pleasant reading Kumar — from whom many shipping correspondents learned the basics of shipping — explaining the inner meaning of meditation as easily as explaining the dynamics of the volatile shipping market.
