AP Govt constitutes task force on flyash utilisation

Our Bureau

VISAKHAPATNAM, Sept 24

THE Andhra Pradesh Government has constituted a special task force to monitor the implementation of the various Government Orders related to utilisation of flyash by all Government departments in the State.

With utilisation of flyash, generated by thermal power plants, becoming a major environmental concern, a nation-wide campaign is on for devising new ways for flyash utilisation.

The current annual generation of pulverised fuelash in the country is estimated to be about 100 million tonne, which is expected to touch the 170 m.t. mark by 2012.

With Andhra Pradesh being one of the major flyash producing States in the country, accounting for nearly 10 per cent of the flyash generated in the country, the constitution of the task force by the Government assumes significance, as it is expected to considerably boost flyash utilisation. The 10-member task force is headed by the Special Chief Secretary to the State Government.

The task force has been authorised by the Government to coordinate with experts in various fields, as and when necessary, and come up with a specific plan of action for effective use of flyash in construction activities.

Dr N. Kalidas, Director of the Visakhapatnam-based Institute of Solid Waste Research and Ecological Balance (INSWAREB), who is also a member on the task force, told Business Line that the task force will identify the grey areas in the implementation of the GOs related to flyash utilisation and work out a time-bound strategy for effective implementation of the programme.

According to a State Government official, non-availability of flyash at the required place and at the required quantity, poor level of awareness and inadequate distribution network are some of the major bottlenecks in flyash utilisation in the State.

Although the State Government had targeted 100 per cent flyash utilisation by 2003, no significant achievements have been recorded in this regard.
