Piracy Info-Tech - New Products & Services PRS Permacel solution to counter fake menace Our Bureau
CHENNAI, March 26 PRS Permacel Pvt Ltd has launched `Kavach', a technology solution to counter the menace of counterfeiting and duplicating. Mr N.S. Shenoy, Vice-President, Marketing, said that a large number of industries in the country were plagued by the problem of counterfeiting. For instance, the FMCG industry loses Rs 2,600 crore per year to the manufacturers of fake goods. In the rural areas, the incidence of piracy is four times that in the urban areas. Branded players, besides losing market share, also suffer from loss of reputation. Mr Shenoy said Kavach was a holistic system offering customised technical solutions to the manufacturing companies. The system is devised on five levels starting with holograms and going on to the latest printing techniques and specialised inks. However, he said brand piracy could be reduced greatly but not eliminated. The Kavach division of PRS Permacel will focus on assisting manufacturers in sectors such as automobiles and auto spares, agrochemicals, office industrial consumables, personal care products, electrical distribution, textiles and pharmaceuticals. Since the solutions are customised, the cost would vary. The company with a turnover of around Rs 50 crore spends almost four-five per cent of its turnover on research and development. PRS Permacel, now part of the Premchand group, was earlier the industrial products division of Johnson & Johnson (India). In the global restructuring process, J&J sold the worldwide business of Permacel in the early 1980s. The company continued to be a part of J&J till the Premchand group took it over in August 1999.
