Raj TV defers launch of Telugu channel

Sriram Srinivasan

CHENNAI, May 12

RAJ TV has deferred the launch of its general entertainment Telugu channel, Vissa, by three weeks, its CEO, Mr Rajeev Nambiar, told Business Line.

Along with Vissa, the channel's proposed 24-hour music and news channels are likely to kick off operations on June 14, instead of May 23.

He said the television house has to resolve "some loose ends" in programming and thus the delay.

Vissa, to begin with, will focus on soaps — a programming strategy adopted to good effect by the top two channels of the Telugu market, Gemini and ETV, which together contribute over 20 half-an-hour slots of soaps daily.

"Our immediate goal is to follow the leader," said Raj's Associate Vice- President (Sales & Marketing), Mr R. Radhakrishnan.

But the programming accent will change once Vissa gets established. Raj sees big scope in telecasting programmes on career counselling, education, agriculture and news. In addition, there would also be formatted shows, talk shows, reality and game shows, for which talks are on with production houses.
